There are a lot of reasons for wanting to have your MySpace profile set to private. Some are more important than others, but all of them are valid reasons. The number one reason most people consider setting their profile to Private is because of just that – it will be private!

When you think about how many millions of people are members of MySpace, and have the potential to look at your profile, it can make you stop and think, because there is a lot of personal information included on the normal MySpace profile! You will always have a few naysayers that will refuse to make their profile private. Either they are proud of their profile and how it looks, or they are prideful and want the world to see their photos, maybe a poem or two they have written, and how many people are on their Friends list. You get the idea! They never stop to think that a cyber stalker could take that information and really do some major damage with it.

Just think – not just your name, maybe even your full name, plus the names of any of your family members would be right up there for the entire MySpace world to look at if you don’t have your profile set to private. All your photos are exposed for anyone who accesses your profile to see. And how about those rants and raves you may have left in your MySpace blog? It could be kind of embarrassing if say, your boss just happened to be surfing the Web and came across your profile on MySpace.

And, don’t say that your boss would never do such a thing! It is becoming commonplace for those in authority positions at work and school to check out   the people who are on the payroll, or enrolled in their school, to see what they do with themselves when they are away from the job or the classroom. You can’t call it an invasion of your privacy, because you have got all of that information out in the open for everyone to examine and ponder – and possibly act upon.  No one  wants their boss, or their college professor, or anyone for that matter to be able to examine their information that closely - especially those rather intimate details you just may have posted about you and your partner!

By setting your MySpace profile to private, you do not have to worry about anyone you don’t know looking at your profile, and you don’t have to worry so much about what kind of personal information you write on your blog or in any of the other sections on your profile, such as the “About Me” section. Are you ready to make your profile private? Here’s how!

Log into your MySpace account. Then, go to “Account Settings”. Do you see where it says “Privacy Settings”? Go to “Change Settings.” If you scroll down, you will see a box that will say “Who Can View My Full Profile.” Go here, and you will be able to choose from three options. They are “My Friends Only”, “Public”, or “Only Users Under 18.”
Choose “My Friends Only”, then scroll down the page and select “Change Settings.” Your profile is now private! Note that if you are 14 or 15 years of age, your profile is automatically set to private. If you try to change your age to seem older so your profile is public, just hope that you don’t get reported to MySpace! If you do, they will pull your page, and all of your hard work on your profile will be lost. Better to be safe than sorry!
