Most MySpace devotees spend a lot of time browsing through the site checking out the profiles of others. This is a great way to find new friends, and also a great way to run across some absolutely killer themes! You’ll see themes that you never dreamed existed! Where did these people find these great themes, and how can you get one of them for yourself?
Themes are definitely the thing that gets you noticed on MySpace. The default theme that you get when you first join MySpace is definitely nothing special. No one is going to give your page much attention with that theme. The more people that notice your profile, the more friend requests you will get. This theory has been tested and proven time and time again. When people see a great theme that they really like, they not only will more than likely send you a Friend Request, they will also probably tell their friends to check it out. Those friends tell some of their friends, who tell some of theirs, and on and on it goes – sort of a domino effect!
Now, let’s get something straight. A killer theme is not necessarily one with all the bright colors, glitter graphics, tons of videos and a dozen widgets. Yes, a theme like that will attract attention, all right – the wrong kind of attention. Think about it this way. When you have lots and lots of different things on your profile, it can take it quite a while to load up. What if the person on the other end has dial up? Not everyone is fortunate enough to have high speed internet. And even if they do, a page full of several different types of streaming content is going to take a little time to load for someone with a fast computer AND a fast connection.
Your profile will attract attention if it is different – plain and simple. Make it different not by filling it up with as many things as you can fit on the page, but by giving some thought to what you want your profile page to say about you. Make it fairly simple. Sure, you can add things to your profile – that’s part of the fun! Just don’t put so many things on your page so that it takes forever to load. And choose a background that is easy on the eyes, please. Not too bright and definitely not blinking and flashing, please!
Be your own web designer, and think like one. You’ve seen enough profiles in your roaming around MySpace – how can you make yours different? Customize. Customize. Customize. The sky’s the limit as long as you don’t violate the MySpace terms of service by blocking the advertisements.
If you’ve never done any sort of web customization, you can teach yourself. It really isn’t that difficult. Google the words Customize MySpace for a ton of links to study. And if you’re a little fearful of messing up your profile to the point of no return, you CAN use a premade template. There are thousands available out there. Again, use Google to search for them, and follow the directions usually given on the page where they are located to install them. Add a photo or two, a widget or two, whatever you like, but don’t go overboard. Just remember – simple is better, whether you are using a template or customizing a profile from scratch.
Once you have designed your new profile page, test it out for yourself. Does it load quickly? Is it pleasing to the eye? Will it draw attention – the right kind? If so, you’ve created a killer theme!
